Mr Rick Brown

MA (Cantab) MB BS FRCS (Tr&Ortho)

Oxford University

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

I have been an established Orthopaedic Consultant since 2004. After establishing and developing the Foot and Ankle Service in Cheltenham for 12 years, I was appointed  an Orthopaedic Consultant in The Oxford Universities Hospitals Trust in 2016.  I am also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecture in The University of Oxford and  still have an NHS practice in Gloucestershire in the North Cotswolds Hospital. I see private patients in both The Manor Hospital, Oxford and The Cheltenham Nuffield Hospitals.

I graduated from Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge in 1989 and then King’s College Hospital, London in 1993. My specialist Orthopaedic training was at The Middlesex Hospital, London. My interest in all Foot & Ankle conditions was inspired during  advanced training in Foot & Ankle Surgery at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and The Middlesex Hospital London as well as a Fellowship at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead, Sydney, Australia. In 2002 I was an International Fellow at Harvard, Boston, USA.

I strongly believe in teaching the next generation of surgeons. I am the Chairman of the Education Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, and  am often a Course Director, Chairman or  lecturer on many National and International Foot and Ankle Courses. I maintain the standard for  newly qualified Consultants as an  Examiner of the FRCS (Tr&Orth), the highest level of orthopaedic qualification.

My elective practice is exclusively Foot & Ankle surgery. This is mostly adults but I do see older children with Foot and Ankle conditions. My interests are in ankle arthritis, painful forefoot problems, sports injuries, minimally invasive hindfoot surgery and complex conditions due to underlying problems.

In 2023 I was elected the President of the British Orthopaedic Foot And Ankle Society, who is the senior  Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon in the UK.
